George Buter, aged 88, passed away peacefully at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers, surrounded by family, on Nov. 19, 2018. He was born in Maderveen, Holland on Nov.11, 1930. In 1964 George and his wife Pieta and their 2 sons immigrated to Canada, settling in Houston before having 2 more sons. George worked at a few sawmills around Houston before beginning work at the Northwood Sawmill where he retired from in 1992 as a saw filer.
George was an active member of the community, joining the Volunteer Firefighters in 1970 and volunteering with building the curling club. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing, golfing, curling and bowling. After retiring, he loved driving his motorhome in the summer to see the sights and his children and grandchildren in Langley and Langford. And everybody on 15th street will always remember his passion for gardening.
Predeceased by his parents and 2 sisters in Holland, George is survived by his wife, 4 sons, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Holland and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Holland.
A Funeral Service was held on Nov.26th at the United Church in Houston. George was laid to rest in the Mountainview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s name would be appreciated to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
