George Thiessen
George “Shorty” Thiessen born in Gretna, Manitoba on April 8, 1937 and passed away peacefully in his home in Winnipeg, MB on April 26, 2018. His wife Trudi of 60 years was by his side. He was 81 years old.
George met and married the love of his life Trudi, in July 1957. They moved to Winnipeg in 1960 where they raised their family. After various jobs, George became entrepreneur of Shorty’s Construction in 1966, which later became known as Shorty’s Fencing. He continued working until his retirement in 2007.
He is survived by his wife Trudi and their four children, Reynold (wife JoAnn) Thiessen, Donna (husband Norm) Kipling, Kim (husband Gilles) Poiron and Kerry (wife Karen) Thiessen. He also leaves to mourn his granddaughters Korinn Thiessen, Brittany (partner Stefan) Etches, Serena (husband Kim) Klanreungsang, Stacey (husband Michael) Acquisto, and grandsons Jason Collins and Aidan Dickson; great-grandchildren Lorenzo, Matteo, Kayla, Anna and Kora. He is also survived by his brother Ben (wife Mary), and two sisters Marion (husband John) and Marge, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
George was predeceased by his parents Katharine and Jacob Thiessen and his two sisters Kay and Ann. He was also predeceased by his grandson Justin Deege Poiron.
Dad was an avid golfer at various courses throughout the years within Winnipeg and also in San Antonio in the winter months where Dad and Mom were snowbirds for over 30 years.
He was an active member of the Church, Union Gospel Mission, West Park Manor, Upwards Basketball and Church Under the Bridge which served the homeless in San Antonio, Texas.
Dad made many acquaintances through his business career and had many friends in his retirement years. He will be sadly missed at weekly coffee with the boys and lunch with the Bible Study girls at the Sal’s.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and a Celebration of Dad’s Life will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 2:00pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Union Gospel Mission, PO Box 1073, STN Main, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2X4.
