Gene Doris Armstrong (nee Noble) passed away suddenly on November 4, 2018 at the University of Alberta Hospital at the age of 97.
She is survived by her three children, Wesley Armstrong, Marion Piper (Claire Shielke), Joan Armstrong; four grandchildren, Gregory Piper (Diana), Riley Walls (Valerie), Jeness Murrin (Sheldon), Amy Walls, and five great-grandchildren, Kian, Braelyn, Edward, Samantha, and Elliot. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews who were extremely important in her life that she loved dearly, as well as her beloved dog Fab.
She was pre-deceased by her sister Marion Noble, her parents William and Annie Noble, her beloved husband Dr. H Brock Armstrong of 44 years, and her son in law Gordon Piper.
Gene was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta. She always aspired to become a nurse and applied to the Royal Alexandra Hospital. It was through her career as a nurse that she was able to meet a tall, dark and handsome doctor named Brock. They were married in 1948 and shortly after became a family of five. Gene stayed home to raise her three children and created numerous wonderful memories over the years. She marveled over her children’s achievements and accomplishments and was always standing in the front row cheering them on. Gene was a fiercely independent thoughtful woman who was entirely devoted to her family and who will be dearly missed by them. A woman who would never leave the house without her earrings or lipstick and a purse full of candies to hand out to others. Gene was involved in numerous community and church groups and was always wanting to lend a helping hand. Kind and gentle natured, she would never turn up on your doorstep empty handed. In the later years of her life, Gene enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow. Never far from home and always ensuring nobody was left hungry, Gene lived out her days with family always near her side.
The family would like to thank the doctors, staff and EMS crew from the University of Alberta Hospital, as well as Edmonton Home Care for their kind and compassionate care that Gene received.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brock Armstrong Memorial Lectureship in Child Health at the University of Alberta or a charity of their choosing.
A Memorial Service celebrating Gene’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018, at Connelly McKinley Edmonton South Chapel, 4820 Meridian Street NW, Edmonton.
