Frederick « Fred » Abner Wortman
1948-2018
After a courageous battle with cancer,
Frederick « Fred » Abner Wortman, age 69, of Salisbury, passed
away on August 6, 2018 at the Moncton City Hospital with his wife by
his side.
Born December 23, 1948 at his
grandparents’ home on Veterans Avenue in Salisbury, NB, he
was the second son of the late Frank and Irene (Killam)
Wortman.
Fred began milking cows and doing farm
chores as a young boy on his parents dairy farms, and throughout his
life spent many days as a dairy farmhand (several years on his younger
brother Peter’s dairy farm). He was happiest in the fields driving a
piece of farm equipment.
Fred was a kind, quiet and gentle man
who enjoyed the simple things in life. He had a passion for Nascar
racing and in earlier years he enjoyed several trips to the States
with his racing buddies. His love of car racing also took him to the
local Petty Raceway. He loved to plant a vegetable garden just to see
things grow. He often told his wife that the best purchase they ever
made was the two-seater swing on the deck where he read the
newspapers, watched the birds at the feeders and be entertained by the
humming birds « hummers ». He also enjoyed going to the auto
shows, bowling, fishing, reading biographies and old auto magazines,
and listening to country music.
You could frequently see Fred driving
around in his Ford Ranger truck and stopping off at the local
K&B takeout to join his coffee buddies. Early Saturday
mornings he was off again to the Family Favourite Restaurant with his
friend and brother-in-law Roger Beckwith to join another group of
coffee buddies.
In his single years Fred always owned a
camp to escape to in the Elgin and Prosser Brook areas. He loved
mustangs and often spoke of the year 1967 when he and his older
brother Lawrence bought brand new mustangs (Fred’s was green and
Lawrence’s was red). He also spoke of the great times he had with his
grandfather Pid Wortman and put on many miles chauffeuring his dad and
grandfather Pid to various locations.
He supported his wife’s passion for
genealogy and patiently accompanied her to cemeteries in NB, NS, and
Maine.
Fred is survived by his wife of 29
years, Judy (Carll) Wortman; his two brothers Lawrence (Carol) and
Peter (Cheryl) both of Salisbury; his two sisters Lois (Byron) Jonah
of Edmonton and Faye (Roger) Beckwith of Second North River; his
daughter-in-law Kelly Edgett and his two grandchildren Chandler and
Anna all of Waterside. He is also survived by his goddaughter Breanna
Saulnier; aunts Judy Wortman and Jean Killam Wilkie; uncle and good
friend Bernie Wortman; mother-in-law Mary Carll; several brother and
sister in-laws; nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Fred was
predeceased by his son Troy (2014).
Special thanks to Dr. Ismail Sharif,
nurses and support staff of the Moncton Oncology Clinic, and the 4200
Oncology wing of the Moncton Hospital for the care provided to
Fred.
There will be no services by request.
Interment will take place at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens. If desired,
memorials made to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital (Oncology Unit),
Canadian Mental Health Association or charity of the donor’s choice
would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements in care of Salisbury
