Obituary for Frederick Ernest Stock
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Frederick Ernest (Fred) Stock at The Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, January 6th , 2018 – four days before his 90th birthday .
Fred was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to British parents Elsie and Herbert Stock. The family returned to Hull, England in 1940. He was a fun-loving teenager and joked that “you should never ask a question to which you might invite the answer « no »”. He loved ballroom dancing and cycling, and joined a cycling club where he met Audrey whom he married in Sept, 1952. He loved working on cars and became an apprentice mechanic while attending night school for many years to earn his qualifications in mechanical and electrical engineering.
In 1967, he accepted a position with Manitoba Bridge & Engineering Co. and moved his family to Winnipeg. Fred loved to travel and covered Canada with his family from coast-to-coast within the first few years of his arrival, taking many photographs then developing them himself in the basement darkroom he had built. Always physically active, he went for regular runs with the family dog and became a member of the Manitoba Marlins Swim Club, entering many competitions and winning many medals. Known for his motto » If you`re going to do a job, do it properly!”, he had a huge, fruitful vegetable garden and a magnificent lawn.
In 1975 he joined Manitoba Hydro, from which he retired in 1996. He took up flying as a hobby and became so passionate that he went on to become president of The Winnipeg Flying Club, later earning his commercial pilot`s license. He was a member of the Freemasons.
Predeceased by wife Audrey in 2010, Fred is survived by his children Shirley (Gaywood), Gordon (Josie) , and Carole ; Grandchildren Jenn (Garrett), Rachel (Bill) , Andrew and Adrian , and great-grandchildren Brady , Dylan , Kasey and Jorgia.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Waverley who took such good care of Fred during his 2 years there.
A private family service has taken place.
Rest well, we will miss and remember you always.
