Frederick Charles Cole passed away peacefully with his family around him on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the age of 88.
Fred was born on March 3, 1930 in Reeder district, Manitoba to Frederick William and Edythe (Crosby) Cole. Fred was raised on the family farm near Elkhorn, Manitoba with his four siblings. He went to West Two Creeks School where he later became a teacher. Fred loved to ride horses, curl, and play hockey, fastball, and pool. As a young adult, he trained bird dogs in Canada and the US. Fred was best known for his work and passion as an educator. He taught in West Two Creeks, Goulter and Virden Junior High schools. He finished his career as the Assistant Superintendent of Fort La Bosse School Division.
Fred married Merle Stewart from Miniota Manitoba on June 29, 1957. They started their life together in Elkhorn, later moving to Virden where they raised their three children. Fred was an active community member spending countless hours participating in Barbershop Quartet, Elks, United Church choir and numerous other committees and initiatives. Fred will be remembered fondly for his gift of seeing and bringing out the best in people of all ages. As a teacher, his encouragement and dedication to learning helped build many successful citizens; as an administrator, he ensured that schools supported the education of all students; as a father, he instilled the value of working hard and laughing frequently, being honest and acting with integrity and kindness; As a grandparent and great grandparent he was always there cheering on the children in their sports, encouraging them in their endeavours and simply enjoying their company.
Fred was predeceased by his parents Bill and Edythe (nee Crosby), sisters Betty Cole and Linda McDougall, and brothers Keith and Jimmy Cole. He will be sadly missed by his loving family: wife, Merle (nee Stewart); children, Terry Lynne Balcaen (Larry), Kathy Horn (Neil McLeod), and Ron Cole (Tina Estabrooks ) grandchildren, Amie (Jeff) Griffith, Jolie (Nathan) Bootsman, Chelsey Horn (Ryan English), Chance Horn (Chelsey Bryant), Carissa Cole, Teagan Cole, Stephanie (Shane) Emms, Ashley Brady, Matthew (Erin) Brady; great grandchildren, Madison, Roman, Emma and Reid Brady, Ainsley, Ava, and Kendal Emms, Breelee and Benson Bootsman, Lily and Everett Horn.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm from St. Paul’s United Church, Virden with Linda Clark officiating. Interment will be in Virden Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in honour of Fred .
