Obituary of Frances Bremner
Age 73, of Upper Falmouth, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor. Born June 1, 1944 in Moncton, NB, she was a daughter of the late Bertha Jean (Archibald) Mitton and Francis Samuel Martin, RAF, England.
Raised in rural New Brunswick, Frances grew up with a passion for agriculture and community. A student of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (1965), she spent her summers in the greenhouses of Avon Valley and after graduating, worked for several years as a lab technician in the plant pathology department of the Kentville Research Station. In 1974, she left to raise a family and farm with her husband Jim. Together they raised four daughters and ran Falmouth Village Farm, Falmouth Village Forest Services and present day Castle Frederick Farms Inc. Frances also worked in the 1980’s and 1990’s for the Nova Scotia Crop and Livestock Insurance Commission. She loved meeting and learning from people through her work and travels and her home gardens represented a lifetime love and collection of interesting trees and flowers.
Frances was always contributing to her community, whether through Windsor Forks Home and School, St George’s Anglican Church, as a board member of Hants Co-op, a band parent, sport parent, school trip chaperone or member of many other local organizations. She will be remembered for her hard working nature, intellect, incredible strength and beauty, her warm inviting home, her cooking and wonderful sense of humour. Frances lived for her family and her community who were all so lucky to have her in our lives.
Frances is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Bremner; four daughters, Erin (Kory), Robin (Chris), Alyson (Nick) and Kathryn (Donnie); ten grandchildren, Erik, Alex, Ellie, Levi, Marijka, Iris, Myra, Seth, Annika and Jozefina; five sisters, Elizabeth (Hal), Susan (Tom), Margaret (Stuart), Joanne (Ernie), Beverly (Richard); sister in law, Jean; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Francis Samuel Martin, flying officer, RAF and her mother, Bertha Jean (Archibald) Mitton and her step-father, Alvin Mitton.
