Frances « Fran » MacKinnon
MacKinnon (Phillips), Frances “Fran” age 75 of Halifax passed away August 18, 2018 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre Halifax Infirmary. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth Frederick and Catherine Anne (Kennedy) Phillips. She was an accomplished Highland Dancing Teacher, including being a nationally recognized choreographer. She was a founding member of ScotDance Nova Scotia. Fran was an active volunteer with the Halifax Highland Dancing Association and an avid spectator at highland dancing competitions. Before being a full-time mother she worked as a nurse. Subsequently Fran worked in a family-run business as the Office Administrator. In her free time she enjoyed travelling and was an avid painter. Fran is survived by her loving husband Donald H. MacKinnon, daughter Lara (Bryan) Balding, Minneapolis, MN; sons Ross (Stelly), San Francisco, CA; Sean(Christina), Dartmouth; sisters Marie Matras, Edmonton, AB; Priscilla Calvesbert, Bedford; brothers Ken, Sydney; Andy, Ottawa, ON; Alex, Marion Bridge; grandchildren Gavin, Nathan, Kiera, Oscar, Cassidy and Callie and 14 nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, visitation will be held from 6-7 pm Thursday, August 23rd followed by a funeral service at 7pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth, Deacon Tom Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax Highland Dance Association, 23 St. George Blvd, Hammonds Plains, NS.
