Obituary Overview
Foster Whynder
Foster Whynder, age 81, of North Preston, died in his home in the arms of his loving wife Donna, and surrounded by his family, on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 2:20pm.
Born in North Preston, he was a son of the late Hughie and Rose (Whynder) Downey. Foster was a member of Saint Thomas Baptist Church; he was a part of the Brotherhood and Laymen Council for many years. He was also Chairman of the Cemetery Committee for a number of years, and an adult Sunday school student as well.
Foster went to work for the Jock Pile Company at the age of 16 in Kentville picking apples, which also took him to pick apples in the United States. The reason he moved back to North Preston in 1972, was to be with his beloved Donna. He worked in construction and in 1974 became a milk man for Farmers Dairy for the Prestons, East Chezzetcook, Lawrencetown, and Ross Road areas. He worked for the School Board as a caretaker and custodian and retired in 1998. Foster’s final employment was as a businessman of his own – the Whynder Fish N Chips Wagon which he was so proud of.
Foster attended the Pals program at the Northend Branch library in Halifax and Nelson Whynder Pals program and graduated at the age of 76.
Foster loved to sing; he had a very particular voice. He loved his family and spent countless hours with his grandchildren. He never said no to anyone who needed something. Foster was a man who had a smile that made all whom he met feel better.
Even while he was sick he played Dominoes, cards and checkers with his family.
Foster was well known for having a rhythm of his own. While everyone else went one way, he went the opposite without a care in the world.
Foster is survived by his wife, Donna (Johnson); daughters, Elizabeth, Melissa; sons, Darren (Nancy), Tyson (Leda), Chadwick (Minus); 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Regena (Manuel), Aaron (Barb), Claudia, Margo, Rose, Gloria, Linde, Manuel (June); Glasgow siblings, George Jr. (Violet), Elliston (Yvonne), Norman, Vincent, Calvin, Conrad Sr., Terry, Julia (Toddy), Lorraine (Lee),Roletta (Gary), Heather (Rick), Grace, Forenda, and Trina; and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his godfather Thomas Simmonds (age 105); and godchildren, Jouan, Kaitlin, Pamela; and chosen son Ale.
He was predeceased by his brothers Irving and Miles.
Visitation will be held from 12-1 pm on Saturday March 24th in St. Thomas Baptist Church, North Preston with the service taking place immediately following at 1pm, Pastor Edward Simmons officiating. Burial in St. Thomas Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thomas Baptist Church or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
