Obituary Overview
Florence Eileen Burgess
Burgess (Mitchell), Florence Eileen passed away peacefully on April 12, 2018 lovingly surrounded by her family at the QEII Infirmary in Halifax. Born on June 12, 1928 in Windsor Junction, she was a daughter of the late James Thompson Mitchell of Oyster Pond, Jeddore and Vera Lavinia (Lively) of Beaver Bank. Florence attended her early school years in “The Junction” and then travelled by train to Bedford for High School. Of the different positions she held during her working career, she found her time at Simpsons-Sears the most rewarding and enjoyable. During this time special friendships were formed and remained to be forever enjoyed. Over the years, Florence volunteered in door to door canvasing for The Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation and The Cancer Society. She also spent many Wednesday’s helping with the Seniors Luncheon held at Fairview United Church. These were some of the ways Florence lived her strong faith. On a day to day bases she lived her faith quietly in her gentle kind manner. Florence was baptized, confirmed and married in her home church of St. John’s in Windsor Junction. When she and Gordon moved to Fairview in 1953, she transferred to Fairview United where she remained. Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gordon Frank Burgess (2006); sisters, Marion Hartling, Grace Pickrem, Isabel Dunn, Edna Mitchell and Janet Smith. Florence was truly a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, friend, sister and aunt. Family was the most important part of her life and it was evident by the bright warm smile we all would receive each time we walked through the door. Florence is survived by her son, Alan Burgess (Dianne; daughter, Sandra Fenn (Mark) all of Halifax; her grandchildren, Jennifer Kennedy (Michael), Hammonds Plains, Bradley Randall, Shilo, MB, Kelly MacArthur (Mark), Dartmouth and Amos Fenn, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Anna and Isaac Kennedy, Hammonds Plains; her sister, Linda “Bonnie” Wilson (John), Parksville, BC as well as several nieces and nephews. We wish to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff of the QEII Emergency Dept. for the compassionate care and nurturing our mother received and all the kindness you bestowed on her family. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 am Wednesday, April 18 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax where a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations in memory to the QEII Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences and tributes may be made by visiting the Halifax Chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
