Obituary Overview
Esther Feir
Esther was born November 11, 1920, and raised in the Good Hope District of Alberta. She is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Theresa Thomas; her siblings: Elmer, Ruth, Gladys, Kathleen, and Louis; and her husband, Albert.
She is survived by: Her three children: Ed (Carolyn), Joanne(Russ), and Dalyce(Rudy). Her grandchildren: Shelly (Matt), Raymond (Alaina), Kim (Garth), and Shannon. By her great grandchildren Alexandra, Katherine, Rebecca, Kailey, McKelti, Colten, Jasmine , and Jay. And by her brother Warren, brother-in-law Don, and sister-in-law Joan.
Esther loved family. She knew all her children’s friends and their families, and everyone’s birthdays. Whatever she was doing, she found ways to help, connect with, and stay close to friends and family. She was the long-time host of Thanksgiving and other big holidays where everyone could always depend on enough food to feed an army, including a big pot of mashed potatoes and usually some angel food cake. She was the family matriarch who remembered how everyone was related to each other, and kept in contact with family members just to make sure everyone was doing well.
She also liked to keep herself busy. Esther and Albert traveled extensively with friends and family, through Europe, Ireland, and the United States, while also enjoying many camping trips closer to home. She worked at the Hudson Bay store downtown, and later did custodial work for the Edmonton Public School Board, which meant she would walk from their home in Inglewood to Oliver School (approx. 20 blocks) everyday, weather permitting, until she retired at 65. She was also very involved with the Church Ladies group, assisting with their yearly fundraisers for the church, and with craft ideas, which were very prosperous for the church.
In her latter years, Esther continued to remain active. She knit slippers and mitts while she watched Oilers’ games –Wayne Gretzky remained a perennial favorite. Most of her knitting went to Bissell, and many pairs of slippers and mittens went to family and friends. Esther and Albert moved to St. Andrew Center in 2015, after 64 years living in their home, but remained in the Inglewood District of Edmonton.
After Albert passed, Esther settled into a small cozy suite of her own, and she continued to get out and about. New friends proved the value of friendship at any age, and she enjoyed visits with family and heading out with her friends to the casino and playing Bingo. She will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know and love her.
