Emily Winnifred Fagervold was born on October 19th, 1918 in Sturgis, Saskatchewan. She was the fourth child born to Oscar and Winnifred (nee Wright) Olson. She was raised on a farm north of Sturgis and attended Kopje School where she completed grades 1 to 8 and took correspondence to Grade 11. Emily’s school days were remembered with great happiness. After finishing her schooling, Emily stayed at home and worked on the family farm. They worked very hard but still made time for many fun activities. Emily and her sisters had a great social life, going to dances, picnics, church socials, skating parties and ball games. Emily was very proud to be the driver to these events. The Olson sisters and the Mattison sisters had their own ball team and travelled all over the area, challenging other teams. They even had matching uniforms. In the winter the entertainment was skating on the Etoimamie River. Rudy Fagervold was a hired man at the Olson farm for many years. He became the Love of Emily’s Life. They were married on June 16, 1941. They moved to the Lady Lake District to a small farm for 10 years. Their two daughters, Fern and Carol, were born there. In 1951 they moved to the Ketchen District and continued mixed farming. It was here their youngest daughter, Helen, was born. There were setbacks along the way. Rudy had serious stomach surgery, forcing them to sell their herd of cattle to pay for it. Shortly after this, their house and belongings were destroyed by fire and once again no insurance. With sheer determination and hard work, Emily and Rudy built a new house from scratch. Emily was a very hard worker, doing endless hours of housework, baking bread, cakes, cookies and always “is the coffee on.” Emily sewed for her 3 daughters, making things over from old dresses, coats and wherever she could find enough material. She sewed most of the bridesmaids’ dresses and men’s vests. She also did upholstery work. Emily’s outside chores were never done; bringing the cows in to milk, separating, feeding calves and other animals. She also did a lot of haying and harvest work, riding the mower, cutting and raking grass and later stacking bales and grain sheaves. She shovelled many bushels of grain from the wagon box to the granary. She also helped with the wood for the stoves. Emily was a very even-tempered person and was always happy when she was working, she never complained. Emily and Rudy sold their cattle in 1984 but continued to live on the farm. Now they enjoyed their retirement years travelling, bowling, camping and enjoying life. They travelled to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, Churchill, Niagara Falls, Disneyland, etc. They travelled all our Western Provinces. Emily really enjoyed camping. They often went camping with Emily’s sister and brother-in-law, Pearl and Johnnie Karcha and nephew and his wife, Wade and Judy Karcha and their family. Emily and Rudy enjoyed many games at the Sturgis bowling alley. Emily entered Preeceville Long Term Care in November of 2011 until her passing. We are all so appreciative of all the extra hugs, kisses, and care mom received from her granddaughter Joanne, who was a caregiver, during her six year stay.
Emily is predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Rudy; parents, Oscar and Winnifred; her beloved son-in-law Ken Greaves; two little brothers, Winford and James; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Nellie (Alvar) Christopherson; Myrtle (Jim) Yaremchuk; Lily (John) Hamilton; a brother Stanley Olson; brother-in-law Johnnie Karcha; mother and father-in-law Christian and Kaia Fagervold; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Curtis and May Fagervold, Leroy and Audrey Fagervold; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jordis and Al Temple; and brother-in-law Vernon Fagervold, who died in infancy.
She leaves to cherish her memory 3 daughters: Fern (Wilfred) Ebel, Carol Greaves, & Helen (Wayne) Scheller; nine grandchildren: Joanne (Rick) Pristie, Jeff Ebel, Carmen Ebel, Leanne (Scott) Layman, Lisa (Dave) Rauert, Glen (Jolene) Greaves, James (Renaye) Scheller, Rob (Angela) Scheller, Scott (Becky) Scheller.
