Elva adapted to a life of hard work at a young age, having lost both
her parents by the age of eleven. Separated from her siblings, she
lived in nine homes, often working for her lodging, until meeting and
marrying her husband, Murray, at the age of 17. On Young’s
Island (locally known as Ernst Island) she raised seven children,
without electricity or running water, having only two of them in
hospital and two without even a doctor. In 1971 the family moved to
Indian Point and in 1978 they moved to Northwest. After the sudden
death of Murray in 1986, she remained in her home along with her son,
Samuel, until 2007. Then, being alone, she moved on September 8, 2008
to Pine Grove with her daughter, Rose and son-in-law, Larry. There
she enjoyed a peaceful, quiet life, although with declining health,
until her passing on January 26, 2018.
