Obituary of Elsie McKINNON
Elsie Ruth McKinnon (nee Kydd), aged 97, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the Mount St. Mary Hospital in Victoria, BC. Elsie was predeceased by her husband Don, her sister Irene, and brothers Arnold, Ervin and Glen. She is survived by her sister Reta and brother Elton. Elsie will be lovingly remembered by children Dewar (Sandra) McKinnon, Greg (Barb) McKinnon and Donna (Hal) Strudwick, grandchildren Jennifer (Justin), Catherine (Tony), Sheene (Jon), Ryan (Stephanie), Kristina, Leah, Lauren and Kingsley (Glenna) and great-grandchildren Athan, Nika, Lulu, Brooklyn, Jordyn, Charlotte, Audrey and Cullum. Elsie also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
Elsie was born on the family farm near Grandview on December 5, 1920, the third eldest of the seven children of John and May Kydd. The early part of her life was spent on the farm and attending Sulphur Creek School. She later took Grade 9 by correspondence then went to Grandview School for Grades 10 and 11. While not at school she helped with housework and babysat siblings as it was frowned upon for girls to be involved in farm chores. However, she and her sisters did collect and sell eggs for pocket money so they could attend social events like skating parties and dances that were part of country life. After high school, Elsie boarded in Grandview and Gilbert Plains where she worked as a telephone operator before getting married.
In 1948 Elsie married the love of her life, Don, in the old brick house on the Kydd farm. During their 63 year marriage, they lived in The Pas, Flin Flon, Falcon Lake, Dauphin and Winnipeg. Together they enjoyed raising their three children, traveling with friends and family, camping, canoeing, gardening, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. They were active in the communities in which they lived and delivered Meals on Wheels well into their 80’s. Mom was the rock of the family, humble and self-effacing, with a warm and gentle touch and a witty sense of humour. She never forgot a birthday and was proud and supportive of her children and grandchildren.
Mom had many talents. She made the best bread and apple pies and all looked forward to her Christmas care packages of goodies. Her beautiful handmade sweaters, afghans, baby items and tablecloths will be treasured for many years and generations to come. She worked alongside Dad in the vegetable garden and preserved the harvest for winter. She also lovingly maintained her houseplants, including her special fern that has been thriving for over fifty years.
After Dad’s passing in 2012, Mom moved to Victoria, BC where she resided until her death. In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service for both Mom and Dad will be held in Dauphin during the summer of 2018. A special thank-you is extended to the staff of Mount St. Mary Hospital who showed so much compassion in their care for Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Mom loved, was loved and will be dearly missed.
