Forever in our Hearts and Memories
Surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 79, the family of Elly Thornton are deeply saddened to announce her passing from complications associated with pneumonia.
Elly will be sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, Howard, and her children and their spouses, John (Ann), Sandy (John) and Kelly (Rick). Very much adored by her grandchildren Kaitlyn (Ian), Davis, Curtis, Tate, Claire, Thomas and Sara. Deeply loved and affectionately referred to as “GG” by her great grandchildren Logan and Nolan.
She is survived by her siblings Walter (Justyne), Audrey (Dave) and Gerald (Edna). Predeceased by brothers Jim (Elayne), Douglas (Ivy) and sister Irene (Phil).
Elly retired after 38 years of driving a school bus for First Canada, much loved by her students and fellow drivers. Along with Howie, they enjoyed many winters of retirement in the sunny south of Florida.
An active member of the community for many years, Elly was a well respected coach and umpire for the Chinguacousy Girls Minor Softball Association, and later an active player with the Bramslammers Slo Pitch league in Brampton.
Happiest when surrounded by family and friends, she hosted many summer cottage gatherings, Grey Cup parties and family sing-a-longs where she entertained on the piano and organ.
We will miss her bright smile, infectious laugh and big heart.
Friends and family will be received at Scott Funeral Home at 289 Main Street North in Brampton on Tuesday, January 23 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM for a memorial visitation, followed by a memorial service on Wednesday January, 24 at 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Cancer Society in her honor. We appreciate any words of comfort, shared stories and photos at the links above.
