Obituary Overview
Ella Zibresky (nee Mathis)
1939-2018
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ella Zibresky. We lost our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on November 20th, 2018 at her home due to heart failure at the age of 79. She was mother to her son Jim, grandmother to Jennifer (Trevor), Rebekah (Stefan), Kimberly (Greg), Daniel, and great grandmother to Olivia, Rebekah’s daughter.
She was predeceased by her older son Larry (Cindy), her husband Nick Zibresky, her mother Anna Mathis, and her father Peter Mathis. She is survived by her son Jim (Wendy), brothers Richard (Bonnie), Edward (Darlene), her sister Elsie, along with Elsie’s son Tyler (Candace), daughter Ashley (Josh), Ella’s niece Heather, and her great nieces Madison and Kylee, her great nephew Mitchell, her nephew Tyler’s two daughters and son.
Ella was a happy homemaker most of her life, although she worked at Kiwanis Seniors Home for some years. She loved cooking, and made great cabbage rolls and perogies. She was a music lover, often listening to her favourite classic country songs and also enjoyed Daniel O’Donnell’s music on PBS. She enjoyed watching classic movies on TV from the 30’s and 40’s. She also was a fan of Coronation Street, and any comedy that would play. She loved gardening vegetables, and especially loved tending to her red and pink roses in the front and back beds along the house. She lived in Red Rock, Ontario when they were first married. She lived in her home in Winnipeg for 46 years.
She was a kind and loving person. She loved her three granddaughters and her grandson Daniel. They would take her shopping often for groceries and new clothes or outfits, out for dinner or just drop in for a chat and a visit. They all loved their grandma very much.
She was close to siblings Richard, Edward and Elsie.
Ella was born in Dnepopetrosk, Ukraine and in 1941 she and her parents left the Ukraine and immigrated to Germany in 1946. In Germany, her older brother was born in Salsgitter. In 1949, the family moved from Germany to Canada and lived on a farm in Glenlea, sponsored by the Wiens family when 1000 families of the Mennonite community in Germany were immigrating. In Canada, her brother Edward was born (1950) and Elsie (1956).
When she moved to Winnipeg from Glenlea, she made new friends like Olga her bridesmaid, and Francis Twerdun who was a lifelong friend and mentor to Ella whom she loved very much.
A Memorial Service for Ella will be held on Thursday, November 29th, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ella’s name to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
