Elizabeth Helen Glen (Holmes)
Elizabeth (Betty) Helen Glen (née Holmes), on November 3rd, 2018, after a courageous attempt to beat cancer, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at South Muskoka Hospital in Bracebridge. Predeceased by her husband Kenneth Glen (1999), survived by children Scott (Diana), Lorna (Gord), Karen (Garry), and Arlene (Al). She leaves twelve grandchildren: Jennifer, Lindsay, Emily, Leah, Ian, Ryan, Heather, Travis, Megan, Renée, Christopher, and Mackenzie (and their partners), and six great-grandchildren: Evan, Alasdair, Fiona, Harper, Greer, Juniper, and another on the way. Predeceased by two brothers, she will be missed by her surviving brother Archie (Jackie), her many nieces and nephews, especially her nephew Lowell.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1935, Betty moved with her family to Canada when she was a teen and met her husband-to-be shortly thereafter at a dance. Betty had a long career in banking in both Mississauga and Burlington before moving to Port Carling in 1978.
She spent 30 years working at the library in Port Carling, and was the driving force behind the development and building of the new library in town, where the Heritage Room bears her name. She instilled in her family a love of reading and was never without a book in hand. Over her many years in Muskoka she enjoyed playing darts and cards with her dear friends, snowmobiling and boating, nature walks, gardening, painting, and getting together with friends.
Scotland was never far from her mind and her heart, and she traveled back several times to share her memories of her birthplace with her children. Above all she loved family get togethers full of love, laughter, good food, and the occasional gambling lesson for the children.
A private gathering will be held to remember Betty. Please raise a glass in her memory, and in lieu of flowers please remember her through The Giving Tree at the Muskoka Lakes Library, or Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
