Obituary Overview
Elisabeth Janzen
Peacefully, on Tuesday, November 6, under the loving care of the staff at Donwood Manor, Tante Liese was finally reunited with those she loved, resting in God’s care.
Born in Osterwick, Ukraine, which was part of the USSR at the time, Elisabeth fled with her family to Germany during the Second World War. After her father was drafted into the German army in Poland, the family moved on to Bavaria, Germany, to avoid capture by the Russians. After the war, they traveled by boat with other Mennonites to Paraguay in 1947. They built a homestead out of the bush and later found out that their father had been killed in Poland by artillery fire. After eight years in Paraguay they were sponsored by Tante Maria Peters to come to Winnipeg, Canada. Elisabeth cleaned houses until she found work as a nurse’s aide at the Health Science Centre’s nursery in ’64. She worked there for twenty years until she had to quit due to health reasons. She suffered from Guillain-Barre Syndrome in 2004 but was able to return to her home on McKay Avenue where her brother, Willie, cared for her.
Tante Liese was a caregiver who did all she could for others. Looking after her family and strangers was an important part of her Christian life, sharing her Saviour’s love. Hers was a tight knit family and she was able to spend time together with Willie and Lena at Irene Baron when she was no longer able to stay in her home. She spent her last years at Donwood Manor with her sister Lena, where she was lovingly taken care of.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Victor Janzen and his wife Helen, as well as nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mennonite Central Committee.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Elisabeth Janzen 2018..
