Dr. Norma Jean Murphy
1950-2018
Dr. Norma Jean Murphy passed away at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital, in the company of her loved ones, on Tuesday, August
21st, after a short but courageous battle with
cancer. Born in Charlottetown, Dr. Murphy began her lifelong journey
in education at UPEI and went on to obtain a Bachelor in Nursing from
Dalhousie University and a Master in Nursing from the University of
British Columbia. Having served as a tenured professor at Dalhousie
University’s school of Nursing for 30 years, Dr. Murphy
reached the peak of her academic career in Spring 2018 with completion
of a PhD from the University of South Australia. She lived out her
final days in Millvale, her beloved Island retreat, forever grateful
to dear friends Joan Walsh and Gloria McInnis-Perry for their
unwavering support, and to the PEI palliative home care team for their
compassionate care.
Taking inspiration from her departed parents, Cletus and
Edna, Dr. Murphy’s life was devoted to the pursuit of
excellence, lifelong learning, and dedicated service to her community,
her profession, and to those in need. She is survived by her siblings
— Clifford Murphy, Gerard Murphy(Sharon Mullally), Ronnie
Murphy (Jennifer Burgess), and Rosemary (Carl) Howard; nephews
— Clark Murphy and Christopher (Jody) Howard, and nieces
— Marie Joëlle(Brad) Ambler, Jessica (David
)Casely, Victoria Howard (Michael) Eakins.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Dunstan’s
Basilica on Saturday August 25th at 11am, with reception to follow at
the Haviland Club (2 Haviland Street). No visitation at personal
request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society and the
PEI Palliative Care Association are gratefully
acknowledged.
