Dr. Howard Reino Lahti
1944-2018
It is with sadness that the family of Dr. Howard Reino Lahti,
PhD announces his passing on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Dr.
Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB.
Born on April 22, 1944 in Wadena SK, he was the son of the
late Reino and Esther (Efraimson) Lahti and the husband of Wannee
(Vongsri) Lahti.
In addition to his wife, Howard will be missed by his son
Seela Lahti of Fredericton, NB; his daughter Melissa Lahti (Dave
Redden) of Halifax, NS; brothers Rodger Lahti (Bertha) of North Bay,
ON, James Lahti of Mattawa, ON; and sister Anne Sarrazin of North Bay,
ON; nephew Jason Sarrazin and niece Jennifer Sarrazin, both of North
Bay, ON; cousins Wally Lahti (Kathy) of Boone County, WV; and Elwin
Hemphill (Janet –deceased) of Pictou, NS; as well as good
friends Dallas and Juliet Davis and Wayne Lockhart, all of
Fredericton, NB; Jim Mackenzie of North Vancouver, BC; and old
childhood friends Edward Norrena of Ottawa, ON and Robert
Blair.
In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by aunts
Lil and Doris, brother-in-law Roger Sarrazin, cousin Janet Hemphill,
and good friend Neil McMartin.
At the University of New Brunswick, he received his BSc
(1968, Geology), MSc (1971, Geochemistry) and PhD (1978,
Litho-Geochemistry). Throughout his career he worked and travelled all
around the world, including places such as Greece, Brazil, Saudi
Arabia, Northern Canada, South Africa, Zambia, Ecuador, and Thailand,
where he met his wife Wannee. He spoke of his many adventures from his
travels, as he often worked in remote, uninhabited, and sometimes
dangerous locations. He was a hard-worker with a strong will and was
dedicated to his family and career.
Howard had a bright mind and an impressive memory, able to
recall specific and numerous details for the many stories and jokes he
loved to tell. He was a voracious reader with a passion for physics
and inventing. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and had a
philosophy of common sense and « sisu » (Finnish for
grit/guts/tenacity) that he lived by and strived to impart to his
children.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on
Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 7-9 PM and Friday, January 19, 2018
from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will take place in the J.A.
McAdam Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1:00
PM.
