WHITMAN, Dr. Clyde Sidney BSc., P.E., DDS, Dip. Perio, FRCDS(C), FACD May 15, 1929 – Jan. 20, 2018 Peacefully at University Hospital, predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Ardyth Whitman (Stewart) in 2012, his son Dr. Stewart Charles Whitman of Ottawa in 2010, and his daughter Karen Whitman Hoke of San Francisco in 2014. Also predeceased by his father Clyde Oliver Whitman P.Eng., and his mother Grace Whitman (Armstrong), his sister Isabel Whitman of London (2010), his brother Charles Lionel Whitman of Omaha, Nebraska (2014), and his brother-in-law Sutherland Stewart (1994) (Heather), Sherbrooke QC. Clyde will be dearly missed by his eldest son Clyde Reford Whitman and his wife Ann of Kelowna BC, Clyde’s youngest son Scott Whitman of London, and daughter-in-law Dana, widow of Stewart, Ottawa. Grandpa Clyde will be remembered with great fondness by his grandchildren: Ben, Stephanie, Mackenzie, Grace, Ashley-Ann, and Hannah, all Whitmans. During high school at West Hill in Montreal and at McGill University Clyde was very active in sports. He was captain of the 1954 McGill Redmen football team and for three years was named to the Canadian Intercollegiate Football All-Star Team. During his years at McGill Clyde was elected to the Scarlet Key Society and as an undergraduate he enjoyed many hours as a “Brother” in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Clyde led a very diverse and very interesting life style. He was a Dental Officer in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps, serving in the Active Force and Reserves. He retired at the rank of Major. Clyde continued his career in private dental practice, while advancing his skills to periodontist. Well known and respected by his colleagues, Clyde is a past president of the London and District Dental Society. Clyde had a fond appreciation for all things historical and is a past president of the Glencoe and District Historical Society. He and his wife Ardyth filled his home with fine antique furnishings and were ardent collectors of American and Canadian pressed glass. Clyde is a past director of the London Chapter of Glasfax Canada. Another joy of Clyde’s was the appreciation of fine wines. He was a long-standing member of the Opimian Wine Society and served as London Chapter’s area secretary for seven years. Community service was an important part of Clyde’s every-day life. Not only did he get involved, he took leadership positions in support of several local organizations. He is a past president with the Glencoe Rotary Club, and was a very active participant in S.L.R. at Westminster College, London. Clyde also had a variety of personal pursuits. He had a keen interest in birding and is a past president of the London Bird Dog Club. He was also active in the MacIlwraith London Chapter where he most enjoyed the annual Boxing Day Bird Count and Hawkes Cliff. Plans are a future private graveside service when Clyde will reunite with his wife Ardyth, being interred together in the St. Anne’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Commissioners Rd. W., Byron. As an expression of fond memories and sympathy to the family, memorial donations may be made to Clyde’s favorite charity, The Nature Conservancy of Canada, or to the St. Anne’s Anglican Church Memorial Fund.
