Douglas « Doug » James Downing
September 1, 1951 – December 18, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug who passed away peacefully on December 18, 2018 after a very courageous battle with cancer.
Doug was predeceased by his parents James & Cynthia Downing. He is survived by his wife Trish, sons Michael (Monica) and Aidan, daughters Stefanie and Meg (Brandon) grandchildren Olivia, Mason & Lincoln and ex-wife Mie. Doug is also survived by his sisters Bev & Sheri (Terry) and many nieces and nephews as well as extended family and friends.
Doug was born on June 4, 1951 in North Vancouver. His fondest memory of his childhood was summer vacations with his parents and sisters in Birch Bay. As a teenager, just graduated from high school, he and his two best friends, Rick & Graeme, spent a year traveling through Europe in a blue VW van. Those three young men remained best friends throughout their adult lives.
Doug was employed by ICBC for over 40 years. Working his way up the ladder, he retired in 2017 as a senior executive. He loved technology and that served him well in his career. He also loved music, traveling and cooking – you can never have enough bottles of sauce.
A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held in the spring of 2019 – date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doug’s name to Lions Gate Hospital – Chemotherapy Unit at lghfoundation.com.
