Obituary for
Dorothy Miller (Bessant)
Dorothy Miller (nee Bessant)
April 24th, 1924 (Wawanesa, MB) – September 3rd, 2017 (Calgary, AB)
With family by her side, Dorothy passed away Sunday, September 3rd, 2017 at the age of 93. She is survived by son Ken (Janet); daughter Gayle; grandchildren Paul Miller, Amy (Joe) Wilson, Ali Impey and Matt Impey. She is predeceased by her daughter Wendy in 1962 and her husband Archie in 1991.
Dorothy was born to Walter and Beatrice Beasant (nee Cromptom) on the family farm near Wawanesa, Manitoba. She was the youngest of 3, with an older brother (Howard) and sister (Esther). She attended Lily Hill School before having to leave it in order to help out more on the farm.
Dorothy met Archie at a community dance and they were married in Killarney Manitoba in June 1950. They welcomed their daughter Wendy in October of 1952, and their son Ken in July of 1956 and their daughter Gayle in January of 1963. The family lived in Wawanesa, in a small house with a huge garden at the bend of the Souris River beside the public swimming pool.
Dorothy was an active member of the United Church Ladies Auxillary and enjoyed dancing, quilting and reading (especially any western stories). She was known for her baking, canning and pickling.
Once Dorothy was ‘empty-nested’ she kept busy in the care of Archie and in volunteering at the Personal Care Home in Wawanesa.
In 2004, Dorothy moved from Wawanesa to Calgary Alberta in order to be closer to family. She took up playing the guitar and loved to play and sing any classic Country music, especially Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and George Jones. Even in her later years as she suffered with dementia, she brightened up whenever she heard country music. She lived the last years of her life in the caring hands of the Beverly Centre (Midnapore) in Calgary.
A Graveside service will be held on Thursday May 24, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Wawanesa Cemetery with Shirley McBurney officiating. Following the interment a reception will be held at the Wawanesa New Horizons Centre. Everyone is welcome. Friends that so desire, memorial donations can be made in Dorothy’s memory to a charity of choice.
