Dorothy E. Curran
Dorothy Ellen Curran, 91, of Falmouth, formerly Cambridge, King County, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 14, 2018 in the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. Born on May 9, 1926 in Port Hood, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Henry “Guy” and Emma “Grace” (Watts) Smith.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. After the death of her mother (Jan. 11, 1928) and her father (Jan. 30, 1929) Dorothy and her siblings went to live with their aunt and uncle, Elsie M. Smith and Roland “Rollie” Myers, and their daughter Abbie in Cooks Cove, Guysborough County.
Dorothy attended school in Guysborough and Mount Saint Bernard College in Antigonish. She graduated as a registered nurse from Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal in 1947. She was employed in several hospitals and institutions across Canada, for 34 years.
Dorothy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her only daughter, Angela (Wayne) Leighton; granddaughter, Jennifer Capeling; great grandsons, Austin and Aiden Capeling all of Falmouth; special nieces and nephews, Connie (John) Oliver; Lisa (Reggie) DeCoste; Roland (Liz) Morrow; Terrance (Pam) Morrow; Guy (Cathy) Williams; Cheryl Farwell; Joyce (Brain) Creighton; Marilyn (Simon) Ma; Marcia (Larry) McKenna; and many other nieces and nephews; step-daughter-in-law, Melodie Curran; step -daughter, Colleen (Bob) Mckay, step-son, Bernard (Laura) Curran; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; special friends of Dorothy’s, Donna and David Munro of Cambridge who were invaluable following Walter’s passing.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents (Guy and Grace); guardians (Elsie & Rollie); first husband, Elliott Morrow (1988); second husband, Walter Curran (2008); two sisters, Ruth Smith (1928) , Sarah Williams (2006); two brothers, Edison Smith (1944), Wesley Smith (1944); cousin/sister, Abbie Morrow (1985) two step-sons, Bruce and Brian Curran.
A very special thank you to the staff of Windsor Elms Village for the kind and compassionate care shown to Dorothy while a resident of Meadowview House 1.
Cremation has taken place under the care of the Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0.
After a time of reflection a private family gathering and burial will take place at a later date.
