Dorothy “Ann” Crook
Crook, Dorothy Ann – age 78, of Cole Harbour passed away peacefully at home with family at her side on Wednesday Jan 24th, 2018. Born in Charlottetown, she was a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Stewart) Yates. Mom left home at the age of 15 with two of her friends and made her way to Dartmouth, where her first job was with Moirs Chocolates. Mom became a member of the Canadian Military Reserves known as a “CWAC”. She had a full career in the Federal Government working at 12 Wing, Shearwater and was a union activist with UNDE/PSAC.
Mom was a founding member of the Cole Harbour/Westphal Fire Department Ladies Auxillary which some referred to at the time as the “Fireflies”. The Fireflies had many great times fundraising and running events for the Fire Department. Mom loved to volunteer at community events and fundraisers such as the HRM Recreation’s Canada Day events and the Muscular Dystrophy ladder-a-thon you would find mom helping set up and cooking hot dogs. Mom was a proud sponsor of the Don Crook Ladder-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy. She loved to knit and crochet making afghans which she would donate to community fundraisers like the Fire Department, Christmas Daddies, Community churches, the Blue Knights and sport groups. She also was a member of the St Luke’s Craft Group for many years where she had many good times with her many friends. Mom loved playing cards with her girl friends and spent many hours playing bridge at the Woodlawn United Church and the Dartmouth Senior’s club. Mom was also a member of the 11/12 Tops group for over 20 years. Mom loved getting together with family and friends for parties. She and Dad loved to go to Fire Department dances where they would often do the round waltz. Mom was especially proud of her granddaughter Tamara and greatly enjoyed their time spent together. Mom will be missed by many, she had a giving heart.
Mom is survived by her daughter Frances Matheson (Tim), granddaughter Tamara Matheson (Natalie), her sister Mary Lou Gallant (Bill MacDonald), PEI, brothers Barry (Doreen), PEI, and Arnold (Marie), PEI and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Don Crook, Cole Harbour, brothers Harry, Wayne and sister, Marie.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Wednesday January 31st in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. The funeral service will take place at 2pm on Thursday February 1st, in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Pamela Estey officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow in the funeral home reception centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westphal/Cole Harbour Fire Department Muscular Dystrophy Association Ladder-a-thon.
Special Thanks to the staff and students of the School of Cosmetology in Dartmouth for all the years of pampering Mom, to good friends Nora Roskell of Mahone Bay and Sandra (Sandy) Naugle of Lake Echo, who called Mom every day. She looked forward to those calls. Thanks also to sister Mary Lou who called and visited often, keeping Mom updated on the family in PEI, Tanya the Continuing Care worker who was with family at the end, family and friends who supported Mom with their helping hands and to Dr. Banks and staff, the VON, Continuing Care and the EHS Special program, all of which helped family fulfill Mom’s wish to remain at home throughout her illness.
