Donna Hanson passed away in her sleep at Drayton Valley Continuing Care on Friday, December 14, 2018. She is survived by her son, Dallas Hanson of Drayton Valley; her granddaughter, Chloe Amanda Hanson of Drayton Valley and her ex-husband Stewart Hanson of Breton. She was predeceased by her son Randy. Donna was a unique woman whose influence touched many people. She was instrumental in providing guidance to those who came from broken homes and fractured lives, ensuring to provide a place of safety and security for them. Facilitating the growth and development of her own boys was not enough for her, she also took in strays. Donna was directly involved in the community and had her finger on the pulse through working at the Western Review for almost 25 years. During her time at the Review she helped coach and mentor many young reporters. She was a tireless advocate for no nonsense writing and good grammar and she made it her priority to ensure those values were reflected in the newspaper. Donna was also a great believer in the importance of community journalism and cared deeply about her work. Although her name rarely appeared in print, she was very much the heart and soul of the Review. Donna was a loyal friend with a big heart. She always had an opinion on the direction the town should be moving in. If Drayton Valley was happy, Donna was happy. She loved living and she would always point out to those of us that would complain about our lives that it could be a lot worse so be grateful for what you have for one day you could wake up with nothing. She also loved “Dancing with the Stars” and “Figure Skating” and dreamed of being able to participate, as she lived the last half of her life with mobility issues. I invite all of you who her were touched by her amazing zest for life to picture her twirling and leaping with a huge smile on her face in the land that comes next. Donna has moved on from our world but she will remain in our hearts and thoughts forever. Her compassion and unfailing belief in the inherent goodness of others can help guide all of us who knew and admired her. Perhaps we could try to pass on those lessons to others… like Donna did. I am sure she is smiling down at us right now, thinking to herself “Stop being such a pot licker”. Goodbye for now Mom, from all of your children and friends.
