Donald Vernon Chase 2018

Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory of Donald Chase
Donald Vernon Chase, 85, of Sackville, formerly of Shemogue, passed away at the Drew Nursing Home, Sackville, NB on April 19, 2018, after a period of declining health, with members of his family by his side.
Born January 31, 1933, in Orange, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Caroline (nee Perkins) Burleigh and Frederick Chase.
In addition to his beloved, faithful wife of 65 years, Barbara (Patterson), he will be sadly missed by daughters Dawn Chase of Hopewell Cape, Colleen Johnson(Donald) of Memramcook, and sons Timothy Chase (Mary) of Wilmington, NC, and Stuart Chase (Cindy) of Lower Sackville, NS.
He is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Meredith Duncan(John) of Rainier, Washington, Timothy Chase Jr. (Jennifer) of Virginia, Steven Chase and Heather Chase, Lower Sackville, NS, and by 1 great-grandson, Landon Duncan.
As well, he is survived by sisters-in-law Lois Wiggin, Concord, NH, Lucile Patten(Albro), East Concord, NH, Patricia Ingerson(Roger), Pembroke, NH, and brother-in-law Maurice Patterson (Brenda) of Boscawen, NH, as well as 11 nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by brother Steven, nephews Steve Chase and Karl Chase, mother and father-in-law Lucinda and Wilbur “Pat” Patterson, brother-in-law Donald Wiggin, sister-in-law Carolyn Patterson, step-fathers Stanley Burleigh and Joseph Gidding, and dear friends Sam and Maybelle Reed.
Don was always a believer in hard work and had many occupations throughout his life. In the USA, this included driving a home-delivery bakery truck, lumbering, the USAF, and running a Sunoco service station.
When running a business took a toll on his health, he decided it was time to “go back to the land” and try his hand at farming, a life with which he had grown up. This meant moving his family to Canada in 1969, the country for which he would later proudly obtain citizenship.
When it became evident that farming alone could not provide for his family, he worked off the farm repairing farm machinery, and eventually selling the machinery (owing to his talent for being able to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime!) This last occupation (first with Forano, then Maritime Farm Supply) had him travelling throughout NB and PEI and even winning trips to Europe for his efforts. This also allowed Barb to see other parts of the world as well. He retired from this in 1995.
His love for his family was apparent and it was not uncommon to see him and Barb having an impromptu dance out in the kitchen. His children will remember going fishing, camping, and skating on the little rink he built just off the brook. His grandchildren will recall sliding down the mountain of snow he’d build with the snow blower or riding on top of the loads of hay in the summer.
Don’s own passions were a variety of animals (particularly his horse “Cheyenne” and mule “Sampson”), motorcycles, “Moxie” pop, and keeping a vegetable garden, bordered by over 100 gladiolas.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Park for his care throughout the years, and the staff of the Drew Nursing Home for their care over the past year.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be held later in the summer. Arrangements are in the care of Fairhaven Funeral Home, Salisbury Road, Moncton, NB.
Donations may be made to Drew Nursing Home (Recreational Activities Fund), or a charity of the donor’s choice.
