Donald Roy Meyer of St. Albert Jul 22 1940 Jun 7 2018

On June 7, 2018, Donald Roy Meyer of St. Albert passed away at the age of 77 years. He will be lovingly remembered by the love his life and wife of 52 years Marilyn Meyer, daughters: Natasha (Cameron) Lawrence and Tawnya Meyer; grandsons: Nicholas and Alexander Lawrence. He will also be greatly missed by his brother Allen (Linda) Meyer; sister-in-law Ruby Meyer; brother-in-law Rod (Val) Eckstrand and many beloved nephews and niece. He was predeceased by his parents Carl & Robena Meyer, older brother Jack Meyer and his father in law Roy Eckstrand.
Don was a charismatic character who had a genuine interest in the people around him, he would often strike up a conversation with strangers who would later become friends. He was a collector of stories and teller of tales, one of his favorites to share was how he met and wooed his life long love, his gal, Marilyn.
Don and Marilyn were avid travelers spending five weeks in Europe (BC before children) and taking the girls on month long camping trips in the beloved Airstream to the Okanagan. In their later years they developed a taste for cruising to warm exotic locations.
Don was a cheerleader for those in his world especially for his girls and would often be seen sitting in the audience of the girls dance recitals, shivering during skating lessons and cheering during gymnastic competitions.
As a skilled tradesman and project manager Don took great pride in completing jobs on time, on budget with no deficiencies. Don enjoyed sharing his construction knowledge with those around and was often the on call handy man to those who knew him well. Don was the first to offer a helping hand whether it be hanging a shelf, being a fixer of broken things, finder of lost items, snow blowing the neighbors drive or building his girls the best tree house ever!!
Don instilled and lived by the philosophy of if at first you don’t succeed try again, to always get back on the horse and to make the best of every situation. He was creative, enjoyed music and theatre with the occasion spaghetti western.
Don also had a lifelong love of golf and was an avid golfer. He would often be found on the golf course at 6 am doing a round of golf before heading in to open the Fireside store. His passion for golf eventually spread to his wife and daughters. Having played the local courses Don decided that the next step was to spend the summers golfing at Pigeon Lake where there was a shorter commute to the first tee from the trailer. Don not one to let winter hinder his love for the game, packed up with Marilyn and became Arizona snow birds.
Don was a very lucky man. He spent his first 76 years the epitome of health – often golfing 36 holes a day after he finished his daily regime of 100 pushups and 4-minute planks. His body was as strong as his character, and he was as devoted to his family as his family was devoted to him. He lived long enough to see his girls, Natasha and Tawnya, become women, and to have his grandsons, Nicholas and Alexander, bestow him with the title of Beebop. His last word was the name of the woman who he spent a lifetime loving. In his final year his body faced the challenges of bladder cancer and an aortic aneurysm. We will always remember Don not the way he died, but the way he lived – 29 and prematurely grey.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held in July.
