Donald was born in Provost, Alberta but grew up in Edmonton. He was the second of four children (Lloyd, Margaret, Jack). On completion of high school, Donald moved right into the work force, wanting to contribute to the family. He met Eva Balsillie on a blind date; later proposed at an Edmonton Flyers hockey game and they were married on July 20, 1955.
Donald pursued a career in accounting by attending night school to become a Chartered Accountant and he later taught there while working in public practice.
The family grew with the addition of children, Darrell, Bonnie, Graham, Brenda, Jeanne and Janet. He was proud to have their first family home custom built. The McLeod family lived in Edmonton except two years in Edson. Donald personified hard work, whether at the office or around his home. He easily passed his work ethic down to his children and grandchildren. There always seemed to be at least one of them working by his side at whatever needed to be done.
Donald retired from MacCosham Van Lines as their CFO. He embraced his retirement and the time it allowed him to spend with Eva, his children and grandchildren.
Donald was a quiet man with a wry sense of humor. One thing you knew for sure, when he listened to you, he listened with his whole body. Listening was what he did best. Family life kept him busy be it camping, gardening, curling, bowling or cheering at Eskimos & Oilers games, but that is what he loved.
