Obituary Overview
Donald John Woods
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our father Donald John Woods on November 7th, 2018 at Concordia Hospital, at the age of 75 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Marie, and siblings Eleanor, Margaret, and Alexander.
Don will be sadly missed by daughter Jennifer Dickinson (Clare), son Todd (Corrine)and his three beloved grandsons, Tyler, Tanner and Emmett.
Don was born in Winnipeg on September 15th 1943 as the youngest of a family of four children, to Alex and Marie Woods. He spent his early life living in West Kildonan and graduated from West Kildonan Collegiate Institute. In 1969 he moved to Halifax to continue his career in Medical Photography, where his daughter Jennifer was born in 1971. Don and family moved back to Winnipeg in 1972 to begin a new career in construction, the field in which he would work until he retired. His son Todd was born in 1974. His children were the most important part of his life.
In his younger days Don was an avid camper. He enjoyed many canoe trips on the Bird River system with lifelong friend Lynn Wilson, and often spent time admiring the Northern Lights while paddling at Big Whiteshell Lake. Don also enjoyed sailing, having won a Provincial Championship hosted at The Falcon Yacht Club.
He loved music and computers, and often took in the Jets and Bomber games on his radio. He was a good listener and was always willing to help others at a moment’s notice when needed. He loved to assist with projects and always had something on the go. Don had a vast knowledge of engine repair and was often involved with helping others get their cars back on the road. He loved to spend time with his grandsons, whether it was watching them play hockey or just simply visiting with them. He equally enjoyed sharing pictures of his grandsons with friends, and often spoke of how proud he was of the special moments in their lives. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew and loved him.
We would like to extend our appreciation to the staff of the Concordia ER and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services for their caring and compassion during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Don’s Life has been planned for Thursday November 15th, at 10:00am at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral home at 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard. Cremation has taken place with Interment to follow at a later date.
If you wish to honour his memory, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (Manitoba), 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, R3L 0K6.
