OBITUARY
Donald Charles Severs
February 23, 1934 – December 19, 2018
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Don Severs at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the age of 84 years.
Don was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He was a kind, generous, intelligent and adventurous person with a quiet sense of humor who will be missed by all who knew him. After graduating from the University of Toronto with degrees in engineering and business in 1956, he began an international career in oil with many years living in Aruba, New York, London and the Middle East before settling back in Canada. After time in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, he finally settled in Calgary which became home. Even after spending 7 years after retirement on Vancouver Island, he returned home to Calgary for his final years.
Don was a devoted family man – married 65 years to his high school sweetheart, Carleen. They had years of enjoyment with their 3 children in their world travels. The years in Aruba held a special place in his heart and created a legacy of family time in Aruba. His last trip there was a family celebration of his 80th birthday where he shared his many stories and memories.
He loved politics and for years was always involved in running election campaigns, both provincial and federal. He was well respected in his work and community and served as a Senator for the University of Calgary and was a proud recipient of a Governor General Award.
He loved music of all kinds – playing piano, writing musical parodies with his good friend George and took such pleasure from his musician grandson’s performances. He loved woodworking, making a prized carved chest for each grandchild. He and Carleen loved to travel – especially cruises in the later years with their cousins and best friends, Doug and Doreen Beffort. But nothing gave him more pleasure than time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – and he has left them all with beautiful memories and solid family values.
Don will be sadly missed by Carleen, his wife of 65 years; his daughters Wendy Smeltzer and Dee (Lucio) Filippetto; as well as five grandchildren, Laura (Tyler) and Rob (Kaitlin) Smeltzer, Michael and Jillian Severs and Kira Filippetto. He is predeceased by his son, Gary and also will be missed by his daughter-in-law Geri Severs. The Beffort clan were a special part of Don’s family and he will be lovingly remembered by Doug and Doreen, Scott and Heather, Dave and Cathy and Steve and Jenny.
A private family service will be held to honour his life.
