It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Mary Thomas at Stratford General Hospital on July 29, 2018. Diane will be deeply missed by her daughters Julie (Chuck), and Barb, her grandchildren Mary (Andre), Peter (Olivia), Meaghan (Jacob) and David (Krystal), her great-grandson Jaxon, and cousin “Twinny” Betty (David). She is reunited with her parents, Charles Henry and Myrtle Grace, her brothers Richard and David, her beloved niece Maureen, and her granddaughter Amy.
Diane was born October 5, 1939 in Devonport England; the youngest child of Charles and Grace. She was an incredibly bright student, and graduated Yardley Grammar School of Birmingham in 1955. She worked as a social worker, stenographer, and secretary for many years and spent countless hours volunteering as a member of the Ladies Church Auxiliary, Telecare (23 years), and The House of Blessing. In 1961, Diane married Allan Collins, and together they had two beautiful daughters. In 1967, they immigrated to Montreal Canada, settling in Newmarket, Ontario. In 2003, Diane relocated to Stratford to be closer to her daughters and their families. Both a great love for music and her faith in God inspired her to sing in church and community choirs.
Diane will be fondly remembered for her quick wit and dry sense of humour. She was a generous, sweet, and courageous person who despite battling a mental health disease lived a full and productive life. She was surrounded by a community of caregivers that allowed her to live with dignity and comfort: Dr. Wilkinson and Ruth in Stratford, Dr. House and team in London, Seniors Mental Health team, CCAC, and One-Care. We are especially grateful to Karen (Mitchell Medical Pharmacy) and Deidre (VON) for their friendship and compassionate care over many years.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Stratford first responders, doctors and nurses of the Stratford General Hospital, particularly Dr. McKay and Kate R.N., for their incredible support during Mum’s final hours.
In Diane’s honour, donations can be made to Stratford Perth Rotary Hospice, Canadian Mental Health Association, or a charity of your choice through the funeral home. Private family funeral arrangements entrusted to the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
