The family is heartbroken to announce the unexpected passing of Christine Scholten on February 17, 2018.
Christine was born on November 5, 1966 in Saint John, NB. She graduated from Saint Vincent Girl’s High School and studied at Mount Allison University in Sackville NB where she met the love of her life, Ian.
She is survived by loving husband, and children Abby, Jordan, and Seth. She is survived by brothers Gerry (Pamela), Peter (Sharon), Ben (Mary Ellen), Ted Scholten, and sisters Carla Scholten (Tim) and Rose Magleave (Mark). She also leaves mother-in-law Jan MacDonald and sisters-in-laws Robin, Megan, Erin, Kristen, their partners and many nieces and nephews.
Christine is predeceased by mother Wilhelmina and father Peter J. Scholten, sister Emily Scholten, and Uncle Arnold Derks.
Growing up alongside her younger sister Emily (with special needs) helped to shape Christine’s character of patience, kindness, and a supportive attitude. She applied this in her family life and future vocation.
Christine was employed with the Toronto Employment and Social Services as an Employment Centre Caseworker. She helped so many amazing people from all walks of life achieve their goals and find success in both their careers and personal lives. Christine also was a part of many committees and was recognized with the United Way Spirit Award for her efforts within the organization. She was an integral member of the team and community who routinely went above and beyond to assist clients in reaching their full potential. She will be sorely missed by both her coworkers and clients alike.
Commitment to family was a driving force of her and Ian’s life. She was supportive of all her children’s many interests and endeavours. The children’s responsible and caring disposition are a reflection of this dedication. She was a trusted person to confide and with.
Christine was a fierce competitor, playing university volleyball, flag football, hockey and a variety of other sports. She passed this along to her children, and was passionately involved in their sports programs. She was the Manager for Genesis Football Academy, and the academy would not be where it is today if not for her hard work and devotion.
Christine touched many people ’s hearts with her artistic talent. Through sewing and scrapbooking, she would take simple things and turn them into meaningful memories for the family. Her keen interest in gardening stemmed from her close relationship with her father, Peter Scholten. She worked shoulder-to-shoulder alongside her dad for many summers during her college years.
Christine always saw the best in people, looking to build their potential and freely passed along her infectious smile. True to her dedication to others and selflessness, Christine was a strong supporter of the Gift of Life Program. Her end-of-life donation will surely benefit many individuals and their families and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
There will be a gathering to celebrate the life of Christine on Friday, February 23 from 7-9pm at The Common Café, 1028 Bloor St West. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory can be made to The United Way or Trillium Gift of Life Network.
