LASOVICH Catherine (nee Hamilton) Passed away peacefully at Rapelje Lodge on November 11, 2018 in her 94th year. Devoted mother of Ellen (Paul) Stothers, Laurie, Maryanne (Frank) DePalma, Chris (Gloria), Margo (Greg) Plaunt, Paul, and Matt. Loving grandmother to Jenna, Andrea, Kathleen and Patrick Stothers; Jessica, Kristen, Daniel, Laura, Anthony and Nick DePalma; Cameron, Carly and Brent Lasovich. Special great grandmother to Arbor and Jonas. Dear sister of Bill Hamilton (Mary),Chaffey’s Locks and sister in law of Frank Lasovich, Welland She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John Lasovich (2009), son Jeff (1981), her sister Eleanor Roach and brothers, Jack, Ed, Art and Jim Hamilton. Catherine was born on a farm on November 12, 1924 in Elgin, Ontario. She graduated from Athens high school, Ottawa Teachers College and Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. In 1950, she was hired by Crowland School Area in Welland and taught at Welland South and Maple Leaf schools. After raising a family for some years, she was hired by the Welland Roman Catholic Board, teaching at St. Kevin’s and St. Andrew’s school, retiring in 1987. Her tenderhearted and effective approach endeared her to her many elementary grade school students. Catherine was a multi-tasker at heart. She could read a book, knit a sweater or blanket while watching TV. Her weekly visits to the Welland library for new books and the Blue Star restaurant to have lunch with her life long friends were among her favourite things to do. Family meant everything to her and she was so happy we all got along. Catherine was a gentle soul and she led by example – always loving and positive to all who knew her. She had a gift of making everyone feel special and she never lost her temper, was always calm, and understanding. Our family owes her so much for her unwavering support and kindness in guiding each of us and showing us what is truly special in life. Now at peace, you are sorely missed.
The family thanks all of Catherine’s health-care givers and the staff at Rapelje Lodge, her home for the past 5 years.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov 16 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at JJ Patterson and Sons, 19 Young St, Welland, ON L3B 4C5. A funeral mass celebrating Catherine’s life will be held at St. Mary’s church, 90 Griffith St, Welland, ON L3B 4G4 on Sat, Nov 17 at 9:30am with reception to follow. Vigil prayers will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 2 pm.
Cathy was a faithful member of St Mary’s church and was a reader there for over 30 years. In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Mary’s church would be appreciated.
