LaROCQUE, Eugene P. Bishop Eugene P. LaRocque Sixth Bishop of Alexandria – Cornwall born in Windsor, Ontario on March 27, 1927 passed away on December 16, 2018. Eldest son of Eugene J. LaRocque and Angeline (Monforton). Brother of Dr. Raymond (Jeannette), Geraldine Malenfant (Russ), Bernard (Edna) and Bernadette Morand (Reg). Dear uncle of 24 nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. He studied theology at St. Peter’s Seminary, London, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1952. After two years as an assistant at St. Theresa Church (Windsor) (1952-1954). He studied at St. Michael’s College, Toronto and at Laval University where he obtained a MA degree in French, in 1956. He then went to King’s College of the University of Western Ontario as lecturer, registrar, dean of men and principal. In 1964-65, he was assistant Spiritual Director at St. Peter’s Seminary where he also taught French and Ascetical Theology. Upon retirement from teaching he served as Pastor at River Canard (1968-1970) and St. Anne’s Church in Tecumseh (1970-1974). He was named the Bishop of Alexandria on June 24th, 1974. He was consecrated at St. Anne’s, Tecumseh on September 3rd, 1974 by Most Rev. Emmett Carter, Bishop of the Diocese of London, and installed in St. Finnan’s Cathedral of Alexandria on September 15th, 1974. In 1977, Bishop LaRocque became the first chairman of the Liaison Committee between the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops until 1984 and was a member of this dialogue until 1994. In the same year, he became State Chaplain of the K of C in Ontario until 1987. In 1979, he made Bishop “ponens” for the Knights of Columbus in Canada until 1989. He was a member of the Permanent Council (1987-1989) and a member of Pro Life Committee (1992-1994) of the CCCB and also President of the Ontario Catholic Conference of Bishops (1992-1996). On April 27, 2002 Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation and his final residency was at St. John the Baptist Church in Amherstburg under the care of Father Brian Jane. Visiting will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at St. Anne Church (12233 Tecumseh Rd. E.) from 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm. Parish prayers at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at St. Anne’s Church from 1:00 p.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. In kindness, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul.
