Betty Mason passed away peacefully in her 100th year on November 18 in Toronto, Ontario. Betty was born Bertha Etta Todd in Niagara Falls Ontario in 1919 to parents Reverend Thomas R. Todd and Birdie (Carpenter) Todd. In her teens, Betty moved to Simcoe Ontario with her parents and later met and married the love of her life, Dr. Leonard S. Mason, on May 18, 1940. Betty and Len were best friends for 63 years residing in Simcoe and raising their two children Joan and Peggy. In high school Betty loved tennis, basketball and badminton and later excelled at golf and curling. She had the pleasure of throwing the first stone at the opening of the Simcoe Curling Club in 1954; and, over her long curling career, she skipped Simcoe rinks which won scores of trophies in competitions across southern Ontario. Betty was an active volunteer at the Norfolk General Hospital and the Eva Brook Donly Museum. In 2005, she received the Provincial Ontario Volunteer Service Award in recognition of 25 years of “dedication and hard work on behalf of the Norfolk Historical Society.” Also, In 2005, she was honoured by St James United Church for 70 years of membership and dedication to service in the congregation. Betty was predeceased by her husband Leonard, her sister Clementa Lambert (Dan), and her brother Rev. Collin Todd (Florence). She is survived by her daughters Dr. Joan Barr of Toronto, ON and Peggy Mahon (Ian Austen) of Halifax, NS. She will be missed by her grandchildren Todd Barr (Kate Huband), Peterborough, ON; Sarah (nee Brawley) Gayle Alvarez (Maykel), Toronto, ON; Dr. Melanie (nee Mahon) Colwell (Stacey), Bridgewater, NS; Katy Mahon (Junior Roman), Moncton, NB; Dr. Maggie Austen (Stephen Cool), San Jose, CA; and Jennifer Austen (Corey Tucker), Trenton, NS; as well as her great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Donations may be made to St. James United Church, the Eva Brook Donly Museum, or the Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe, Ontario.
