Obituary Overview
Bernice Kirk
With heavy hearts, we sadly announce the sudden passing of Bernice Lavinia Kirk on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the age of 89 years. She was a devoted wife, strong and caring mother, loving grandmother and true friend to all who knew her. Born in St. Vital, Manitoba on January 4, 1929 she enjoyed her childhood years there with her family. Bernice spent her summers at her grandparent’s farm in Saskatchewan helping with many tasks on the farm. Bernice moved to Fort William with her family in 1943, as her father James was transferred from Winnipeg to the 102nd Port Arthur Battalion. Initially, the family lived on Finlayson Street but later moved to Francis Street in Westfort. She was the eldest of eight children and attended Selkirk Vocational High School. Bernice started her working career at Johnson and Boom Wholesale and then she worked for many years in the Accounts Receivable department at McKellar Hospital before moving on to the Intercity Industrial Supply Company. Bernice met the love of her life, Art Kirk, while attending high school. They were married on July 16, 1952, spending the next 65 years together. Bernice enjoyed her summers at camp on Oliver Lake where she entertained family and friends for many years. In her later years she enjoyed going to tea’s and bake sales with her close friends and spent quality time with her grandchildren. Bernice is survived by her son Allan (Lisa) and beautiful grandchildren Stefanie and Jeremy. She is also survived by her sisters, Marion Zanni, Shirley Koss and brothers, George, William (Virginia) and Robert (Sharon). She is also survived by her brothers in law, Jerry (Dorothy) and Lloyd (Carole) as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives. She was predeceased by her husband Art, her parents, James and Cecilia and brothers, Allister and Arthur. Cremation has taken place and a gathering for family and friends to celebrate Bernice’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the DaVinci Centre on Waterloo Street from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in Bernice’s memory to TBRHSC Surgical O.R. Fund or to a charity of your choice. The Kirk Family would like to thank Dr. Mary Valente for the excellent care she has provided throughout the years. They would also like to thank the firefighters, paramedics and police for their compassion and professionalism during this difficult time.
“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.”
