Barry Hector Breland June 8 1956 April 29 2018 (age 61)

Barry Hector Breland passed away suddenly on April 29, 2018. Barry was born June 8, 1956 to Hector and Gwyn (nee Phillips) Breland in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Barry grew up determined to accomplish goals in life, taking on a paper route at the young age of 9. He continued to excel throughout his life, and would always look for opportunities that would allow him to learn and discover new parts of life. Barry could always be found with a book, and enjoyed passing on his knowledge to the younger generations.
Barry quenched his thirst for knowledge and adventure by participating in Scouts, Army Cadets, and finally joining the North Saskatchewan Regiment at the early age of 15, forging his birth year so he would meet the required age of 16. In his time with the Militia Barry received his jump wings and participated in many other training activities.
Barry began his career with the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in 1977, where he remained for 33 years working as a guard and a Firearms Instructor. From this experience Barry had gained many “shot of a lifetime” stories, as well as a reputation for being a tough but fair individual. Barry excelled in his work, and was often called upon to represent the Saskatchewan Penitentiary as part of the Colour Guard in Ottawa when dignitaries, including the Queen, came to visit.
For his dedication and hard work, Barry had been nominated by his peers and awarded the Medal of Excellence. Barry was very grateful and honoured to have received this award. His family was proud to have a father who worked so hard to achieve his goals.
Barry was married to Mary (nee Seggie), and they had three children together: Kelly, Paige, and Colin. He would take his kids on outdoor adventures, including summers at Candle Lake, boating, fishing, and hiking outdoors. Barry encouraged his children to excel in their areas of interest and would assist in any way possible. He ensured that his children knew that hard work would award them. He was a great story teller and enjoyed sharing hunting stories, and updating friends and family on the latest Roughrider news.
Barry was predeceased by his father Hector; his father-in-law Keith Seggie; his grandparents Adelaide and Antoine Breland, and Sydney and Leona Phillips; and his cousin Morgan Phillips.
Barry will remain in the hearts of his three children Kelly, Paige and Colin and their mother Mary; his mother Gwyn; and his siblings Joan (children Tyler, Jordan, and Nathan), Clark and Yvonne (daughter Angelica), and Leanne (children Breanna and Brad); as well as countless extended family and friends who will always remember Barry for his kind heart and willingness to teach others.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 260-25th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Archdeacon Andrew Hoskin officiating. Memorial donations in Barry’s memory may be directed to the Soldier On Fund – 4210 Labelle Street, Ottawa, ON, K1A 0K2 – in support of veterans and serving members to adapt and overcome permanent physical or mental health injuries through physical activity and sport.
Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home, Lorne Adams, Funeral Director, Prince Albert, SK 306-763-3322.
