Barbara Shirley « Barb » Richardson
Richardson (Allison), Barbara Shirley “Barb”,
It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Shirley Richardson (Allison) announce her death after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on July 25, 2018.
Barb was born in 1938 in Halifax, the only daughter of Fred and Virginia Allison. She grew up in the North End of Halifax; attended Bloomfield School and Miss Murphy’s Business School.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles William in 2009 and their only son Stephen William in 2002.
Barb is survived by her loving brothers Douglas (Louise), David (Shirley) and Richard (Patsy); sisters and brothers-in-law of the Richardson family; many nieces, nephews, cousins, two great-grandnieces and one great-grandnephew.
In 1959, Barb and Chuck were married at St. George’s Anglican Church. Their son Stephen was born in 1965.
The family moved to Toronto in 1967, Vancouver in 1969, then back to Toronto in 1971. Barb studied Environmental Planning at The Ontario College of Art from 1977-78. When the family returned home to Halifax, Barb enrolled in the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating with a bachelor of Fine Art in 1982.
Barb was a talented, creative and skilled artist, not only weaving, but also in painting and decorating. An active member of the Atlantic Spinners and Handweavers (ASH) for many years, serving as co-chair of the standards committee, among other positions. She also served on the Board and Standards Committee for the Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council (NSDCC) during the 1980’s. She taught weaving classes through Dartmouth Continuing Education as well as several workshops for NSDCC.
In later years, Barb enjoyed all kinds of music, dancing and social gatherings with her family and friends.
She was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Halifax, active on the Altar Guild and other church committees.
Barb was very grateful to all of the medical staff who helped her through her journey, as well as the clergy of St. George’s for past and ongoing support. She was also very grateful for the wonderful and thoughtful cards, notes, flowers, food and prayers. Thank you to the many dear family members whose support has been overwhelming. A special thank you to her caregivers who went above and beyond, especially Cindy Armstrong, Kay Richardson and Stephanie Graves.
Cremation has taken place. A Requiem Mass will be held at 12pm on Wednesday August 1st in St. George’s Anglican Church, 2222 Brunswick St, Halifax, followed by a reception. Private interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
For those who so desire, donations in memory of Barb may be made to a charity of your choice.
