Barbara (Babs) Alice Shelford
Babs passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Jan 15, 2018 at the age of 88, at Bulkley Lodge in Smithers after a lengthy journey with Alzheimers. Babs was born in Burns Lake on July 13, 1929, to Delmer and Alice Cassidy. She grew up with sisters Doreen and Marj and brother Ken, at Colleymount, where their parents ran the local Post Office and store.
Babs went to work in Burns Lake, as well as on the Shelford ranch for Peggy, where she met her sweetheart Cyril, who had just returned from overseas. They were married on June 9, 1948. She loved riding horses, whether it was to go to school or just for pleasure. They lived at Wistaria where Babs was strong and hard working, often on her own while Cyril was away trapping, guiding and following his political endeavours. Together they had four children.
They lived there until 1968, when Cyril’s political career necessitated moving to Victoria, where Babs supported her ambitious husband during this chapter of their life. There was always lots of shopping for the social events, which became a favourite past time of Mom’s, she could out shop anyone. They lived in Victoria until 1973, at which time they moved to Terrace where Mom enjoyed her time with all their good friends. In 1980 they returned to Victoria, as Cyril’s career again took them in that direction. They remained there until Cyril passed away in 2001. After a short stay Mom moved to their summer cabin at Colleymount, later on moving to Smithers.
Babs loved cooking and baking for family gatherings or friends when they stopped by their summer cabin for a game of cards or cup of tea around the kitchen table. It was here she also spent time walking, fishing and caring for her dog. Another favourite of Mom’s was dancing to music she loved. Babs loved to travel, her and Cyril enjoyed many lovely holidays with family and friends, as well as many for Cyril’s work trips. On her own she enjoyed making several trips to Reno for fun with friends.
Babs is survived by her children Shirley(Doug), David(Carol), Kerry(Sandra), and Ann(Doug). Grandchildren Cheryl(Rob), Michael, Maureen(Barry), Tanya(Mike), Kari-Lynn(Steve), Jennifer(Shayne), Wendy(Willy) Melissa, Gary & Lisa; Great Grandchildren Laurel, Yeva, Wattsy, Brandon, Evan, Daniel, Alexandra, Elissa, Landen, Bella, Alex, Brayden, Grayson, Kaci, Noah & Peyton.
Predeceased by her mother and father, her siblings, her husband and grandson Kevin.
We would like to say a special thanks to Joy and Lil for the several wonderful years of care they provided for our Mom. Also a huge thank you to the staff at the Bulkley Lodge.
