ELLIS, Barbara Patricia Joan Age 90, of Halifax, passed away suddenly, at home, on February 1. Born in Montreal to Herbert and Maude Caley, Barbara attended Montreal High School and McGill. It was in Montreal that she met and married MacAllister Ellis as he prepared for the Anglican ministry. They moved to Baltimore in 1955, taking their three sons with them. During her time there Barbara worked as a librarian at Johns Hopkins Hospital. When the family returned to Canada ten years later they brought with them a fourth son and a daughter. Settling first in Pugwash, Barbara began to teach high school English, obtaining her B. Ed. from Mount Allison. She concluded a long and inspirational classroom career in Yarmouth. A year after MacAllister’s death she moved to Halifax where she lived the last ten years of her life as reader, poet, and matriarch, in loving communication with her children, all living in Halifax: John Paul (Ann), Patrick (Jennifer, deceased), Michael (Carla Caverhill), Mary Gillian (Michael Forward), and James (Jaclyn). She also leaves thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Caley (Sylvia). A Memorial Service and Holy Communion, officiated by Father Robert Richmond, will be held at All Saints Cathedral, Thursday, February 8, 11:00 AM.
