On behalf of Council, Member Support Services and Administration it is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear matriarch and elder Audrey T. Rivers. Audrey descends from the Paull / Charlie & Joseph / Moses Families. She was born in Vancouver on December 2, 1930 and is predeceased by her parents Andrew Paull Xwepéḵínem-t and Josephine Paull, husband Frank Rivers Sr., siblings Percy Paull – Xwechtáal-t, Yvonne Paull – Sx̱ananálh-t, Josephine ’Hudo’ Lauridsen (nee: Paull), Edna Paull, Marion Paull, and Evelyn Paull, and children Irene ‘Linda’ Rivers, and Frank Rivers Jr. She passed away surrounded by family on September 7, 2018 in North Vancouver at Lionsgate Hospital. She was 87 years young.
Audrey grew up beside St. Paul’s Catholic Church on Mission Reserve IR# 1. She went to St. Paul’s Residential School, and went on to attend Sprott Shaw College. Audrey was married to Frank for over 25 years and raised their family on Mission IR#1. Audrey worked administration for her father in a legal firm, and then as administration for the Mosquito Creek Marina for many years. She spent many years on the membership committee, and Squamish Language Advisory Committee. Audrey carried the Olympic torch over Burrard Street Bridge with Rick Hansen, and did the opening prayer for the 2010 Special Olympics. Audrey was well known for her opening and closing prayers, and was one of a handful of elders that could speak Squamish Language fluently. She was part of the International Choir and part of the ‘God Squad’.
Audrey is survived by and will be dearly missed by her Mén̓men̓ / Children Lillian Rivers – Siy̓ámtnaat, Glenn Rivers (Linda) – Siy̓ám̓esh, Donna Joseph (nee Dick), Kevin Rivers – Sxwchálten, Sheryl Rivers – Siy̓ám̓tnaat, Em̓ímats / Grandchildren Trevor Rivers – Yál̓telḵin, Jill Peters – Siy̓ám̓tnaat, Kim Wilson nee Peters (Doug) – Yál̓telnaat, Julie Peters – Siy̓ám̓telut, Darryl Douglas – Ma-wha, Lily Rivers – Yál̓telut, Delmar Williams (Tracey) – Xwepélḵinem, Temera Williams Miller (Wylie) – Kw’téselwet, Melanie Rivers (Aaron) – Tiyáltelwet, Travis Billy – Siy̓ayáyshen, Courtney Dick, Joshua Anderson (Karmen), Amanda Anderson, Josie Joseph, Kristen Rivers (Karen)- Tiyáltelut, Dustin Rivers – Sxwchálten, many Sch’á7miḵw / Great Grandchildren, and Ts’ép’iy̓iḵw / Great Great Grandchildren
A prayer service will be held at 7pm on Tuesday September 11 and a funeral service at 10am Wednesday September 12, both at Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC. On line condolences can be found at www.glenhavenmemorialchapel.com
