OBITUARY
Audrey Bernice Booth
April 21, 1926 – August 23, 2018
Audrey passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on August 23, 2018
at the age of 92.
Predeceased by her daughter Geraldine Joy Porteous, her father William Edward
Anderson, her first husband Walker « Wally » Booth, her second husband Stanley
Ray Porteous and her only brother Russell Edward Anderson.
She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Gale Scheelar (Irv); Audrey
McWilliams (Robert); Ray Porteous (Lorraine) Stewart Porteous (Joanne); Tim
Porteous (Delores); Rick Porteous (Lynda); Debbie Jordan (Dave) and William
Stratton (Vanessa) and their families.
Audrey was born and raised in Winnipeg and grew up in the West end of the City.
As a young girl she was involved with the Scottish Highland Games where she
became a champion Scottish Highland dancer and won numerous trophies,
awards, medals and cups. She excelled in various events such as the Scottish
Sword Dance, Highland Fling and the Sailor’s Dance. She began taking lessons at 4
years of age at St. Luke’s Church. In total she won over seventy medals and five
silver cups. At the age of 14 she won the Aggregate Cup of all the Scottish Games
competitors.
At the age of 18 she joined the Canadian Womens Corps and was deployed to the
United Kingdom performing in the Canadian Army Shows as a singer and dancer
for a number of years.
Once back from the war Audrey took on the role as caregiver and managed and
operated Care Homes in Winnipeg. Later Audrey resided at the Autumn House
Retirement Home for 21 years where she made some very close friends.
The celebration of her 90th birthday with her family was a highlight for her. She
received letters and congrats from provincial and federal dignitaries and Queen
Elizabeth II (with whom she shared the same birthday)
Mother’s life was not always an easy road to travel but she stayed strong in her
convictions. She was a proud woman and was determined to hang on to her
dignity and manage her life on her own terms.
Audrey loved watching sports on TV – golf, curling and the Winnipeg Blue
Bombers. She enjoyed reading fiction, crime novels and mysteries. She was a
great story teller of her life’s adventures. She kept up with current events and
enjoyed watching and sharing movies of her era. She often would write her own
crime stores and write of her time being in the army.
You are now at rest Mom. We send our love to you in the start of a new
beginning for you where there will be no hardships, regrets and heartache.
Many thanks to the doctors and staff at Unit 4A Health Sciences Emergency Dept.
for your kind and compassionate care.
Funeral service will take place at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway Avenue
on Tuesday, September 4th at 10:00 a.m. A private family interment to follow.
