Art Salt
January 10, 1923- August 13th 2018
It is with profound sadness we announce that Arthur Maurice Salt passed away at his home in the early hours of August 13th at the age of 95 with his family by his side.
Art was born Jan 10, 1923 to Bob and Susan Salt of Enderby where he lived and worked on the family farm with his brother George and his sisters, Eleanor, Marjorie, Jean, Betty and Iris. When he was 23 he bought and operated his first business, a taxi company in Lumby, before moving to Vernon a few years later. While living in Vernon he met and married his wife of nearly 64 years, Joan.
Art is survived by his daughters Judy (Rob) Bradley, Terry (Bruce) Davies and Lisa (Gord Fowler) Salt, his grandchildren Jared, Sarah, Michael, Kim, Dustin, Michelle, Cody, Shane, Melissa and Jordan, and his 13 great grandchildren. He was predeceased sadly last month by his wife Joan, his parents, his brother George, his sisters Eleanor and Marjorie, and infant great grandchild, Adeline Joan.
Art wore many hats throughout his long life: farmer, taxi driver, car salesman, travelling car salesman, travelling heavy duty equipment salesman, business owner, retired business owner and when he didn’t like being retired, a heavy duty equipment business owner once again. His favourite hat to wear however was his trapshooting hat. He was an avid, passionate trap and skeet shooter. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow stopped him from « going up the hill »! In the last few years if his car would not make it due to ice and snow, he would park at the bottom of the hill and walk guns and all his gear up for his date with the clay pigeons. He won many, many, many trophies and awards over the years and even if he had a bad score, he always wore a smile on his face. Art was inducted into the PITA Hall of Fame in 2007 along with his daughter Lisa, a rare accomplishment that he was very proud of, yet maintained his humility – so true to his nature.
In fact, Art was humble every minute of his 95 years. A “horse trader” from way back, he loved to wheel and deal. A handshake was always good enough for him and those who knew him, knew his word was his bond. As a true gentleman, he would often be seen wearing a suit jacket and tie whether at the dusty equipment yard, the trapshooting range or in his home.
He loved the house on the lake that he and Joan built when they were first married and lived for 63 years. He loved the ducks, swans, deer and wildlife that were always in their yard. Not so much the mice!
In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to make memorial contributions in Art’s memory may do so to the North Okanagan Trap & Skeet Club, 5603 27 Street, Vernon BC V1T 8Z5. 250-309-4673 or the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, 2101 32nd Street, Vernon, BC 250-545-2211.
A celebration of life will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home on Sunday, August 26 at 11 AM.
