Anji Davar
1926-2018
The family of Anji Davar is sad to announce her passing,
Friday night, October 19th, at the age of 92. She is survived by her
sons Celes, Zal and Gudarz and their families including three
grand-children and two great-grandchildren. Her sisters Rita and
Elsie, and brother Roque and his family also mourn her
loss.
Anji came to Fredericton in 1960 with her husband and three
boys after living her life in various parts of India and the
US.
Initially a fully dedicated and devoted full-time Mom, Anji
built a network of strong and warm relationships within and around her
community. She was active in the UNB Faculty Women’s
Association, and was renowned in the Glengarry Place area for her
formidably tasty, summertime raspberry pies.
Soon after coming to Fredericton, Anji started a pre-school
and kindergarten in her home that continued for about 15yrs. Blending
Montessori and other early childhood educational concepts in her
teaching, she offered a rich and fun beginning for many children in
and around the neighborhood. Her students played, learned, created,
wrote, and read with an awareness that she saw and encouraged in them
with great astuteness and understanding. Even into her late
80’s, her former kindergarten children who remained in the
area would remind her of their early memories of their time in her
classroom, learning and loving to learn.
In addition to already being a mom and an educator, to
further her education, Anji went on to obtain a Bachelor’s
degree at UNB in Arts in 1987. To say she loved her studies would be
an understatement. She adored learning and plied her skills as a
thinker, reader and writer to her own education with great enthusiasm.
Anji remained a a passionate advocate for literacy and
children’s and women’s rights and a lifelong learner in all
ways, reading passionately and deeply, always loving and celebrating
the deepest insights she gleaned or discovered. Anji’s love
for reading and literacy also became a motivation for her
participation in the Faculty Women’s Book Club group, where
she was known for her forthright opinions, and her encouragement to
the group to read more books by Indian authors.
Anji was also very active, as a participant in the local
arts. She celebrated and helped advance many local artists, and
practiced her own art in multimedia including watercolor and
embroidery, in classes and on her own. In her spare time, together
with her husband, she gardened with industry, love and tenderness to
keep their home vibrant with outdoor beauty through the spring and
summer.
Lastly, Anji’s love for her extended family was
also deep. In her later years at Shannex after her husband had died,
she lived for the moments when family members would arrive, breaking
into an unmistakable smile of delight. Her Shannex family of
care-givers also enjoyed her very much, and the special relationship
she had with each of them.
She will be sorely missed by her wide circle of friends and
family who know that Anji had a spirit of fire, was a fountain of
warmth and kindness, had the highest aspirations for herself and those
around her, and yet was always grounded in the language of love and
compassion.
A reception and celebration of Anji’s life will be
held Thursday, November 22nd at McAdams Funeral Home 160 York St, from
1:30-4:30 PM.
