Obituary Overview
Anastasia Buzunis
Anastasia Ginakes Buzunis left her family with memories of laughter, joy, a passion for the arts, travelling, cooking, entertaining, her children, opera, generosity and kindness to everyone. It is hard to imagine a world without her. Born in Fargo, North Dakota to parents Arconda and Andrew Ginakes. To carry on her legacy are her children; Theodore (Karen) of Winnipeg, Andrea of Phoenix, AZ, Constantine of San Diego, CA, Timothy (Kerry) of Winnipeg, Antonia Killebrew of Las Vegas, NV. Grandchildren; Kyle, Andrea, Eric Killebrew, Jarrett Mack, and Victoria Zuke. Predeceased by her loving husband Peter and her parents, brother Demos A Ginakes, Mary (Bota) Bisbecos and cousin Jimmy Ginakes, with whom she shared a special bond.
Upon graduation, Ann pursued her passion for opera at McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis MN. Her life unexpectedly changed course while visiting Winnipeg with her Aunt Aphrodite Ginakes, when she met her future husband Peter Buzunis while walking down Portage Avenue. They were the first couple married in Winnipeg at the Greek House, by a Greek Orthodox Priest on August 19, 1945.
Ann was an active member in the American Women’s Club, a past President of the Daughters of Penelope and Ladies of Philoptochos of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Ann sought no acclaim. Instead her devotion to family and friends created an atmosphere of laughter, joy and celebration. She was quick with a smile and always the last to leave a party. “Beautiful, gorgeous and good looking” was how she greeted and left you. Everyone simply wanted to be with her.
Prayers will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. Services to honour Ann’s life will take place at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue in Winnipeg on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens with reception to follow at Pony Corral, Pier 7, 1700 Pembina Highway Winnipeg. Pallbearers are George Buzunis, Peter P. Ginakes, Dimos F. Ginakes, Jarrett Mack, Richard Nickel and Eric Killebrew Jr. All Ann’s cousins, too numerous to mention, should consider themselves honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to thank all the staff at West Park Manor for the loving care provided to our mother over the last several years. Flowers are gratefully declined, should you wish, donations in Ann’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6
