Peacefully, in Ottawa on Monday, October 29, 2018, Alex Herz died at the age of 88 years 8 months after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Alex is survived by his second wife Trish MacQuarrie, his sons from his first marriage, Peter Alexander Herz and Michael Edward Herz and grandchildren, Andrew (Dave) Herz and Alexandra Marilyn Herz. Alex was born in the mountains of Bavaria, Germany in Eder Oberstein to Karl and Francis (nee Weiss) Herz and was raised in Berchtesgarden by his mom following the death of his father in a concentration camp in Poland. Alex survived the holocaust, worked briefly for the American Air Force in Germany and then moved to Canada, where he prospered, working with Spar Aerospace and going on to establish his own businesses manufacturing geophysical mining survey equipment which took him to far flung corners of the planet. Alex’s remarkable contribution to the Canadian geophysical exploration community represented an impressive and significant milestone in the lineage of electronic instrumentation. Alex married Marilyn Brooks soon after he came to Canada and they had 2 sons. Marilyn died of cancer in 1979. Alex met Trish in 1998 and together enjoyed a passion for sailing, skiing and eating well for as long as Alex was able. Alex had a good life. He loved many people and many loved him. A mensch, a kind, gentle and good man, he had integrity and honour.
