Obituary for
Albert Jussila
Albert Kauko Jussila (1931 – 2018)
Our father, husband, Poppa, and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, May 16th, at Maison McCulloch Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. Albert was born on October 1st, 1931, in Timmins, Ontario, to Finnish immigrant parents Antti Jussila and Martta (Linna) Jussila.
Upon moving to Kirkland Lake and losing his father in an automobile accident, Albert had to assume more adult duties at the young age of 14. He quit school and headed out into the working world toiling as a carpenter on several projects throughout the province to help support his mother. It was during these years that he discovered a true love for working with wood and constructing buildings. He also found another true love on a blind date, Shirley Hedman, whom he married in November 1954 in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after, they moved to Sudbury for work and to raise a family. While working on a Falconbridge Ltd. Project, he was offered a full-time position with the company and settled in the small town of Onaping with his ever-growing young family. He worked for Falconbridge for 33 years, retiring in 1992 as underground Superintendent at Lockerby Mine.
In his younger years, he spent time hunting, fishing, golfing and curling. He was the « hunt master » of the Gold Anchor Hunt Club on Manitoulin Island where he loved the one week away with his lifelong hunting partners.
The family built a beautiful cottage on Lake Onaping and it was there that we all learned the value of family life and enjoyed quality time with family and friends.
During his 26 years of active retirement, he and Shirley spent all their winters in Texas and Florida eventually settling in Panama City Beach where they were very socially active with their close group of lifelong friends.
Albert is survived by Shirley, his wife of 63 years, sons Robert (Lynn), James (Wendy), Ron (Glenn), his daughter Nancy and his grandchildren, Erik and Carly. He is predeceased by his parents, Antti and Martta Jussila and his in-laws, Carl and Ellen Hedman.
At Albert’s request, there will be no service or funeral home visitation.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who attended Albert with dignity and loving care as well as the staff at the Cancer Center, CCAC, Homecare and the McCulloch Hospice.
Donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in lieu of flowers would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
Order Flowers
