Alastair Al James Johnstone 19662018

Alastair « Al » James Johnstone
1966-2018
With great sadness, the family of Alastair (Al) James
Johnstone, husband of Jennifer (Patterson) Johnstone, of New Maryland,
announces his passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on
Wednesday, March 21st, after months of declining health. He
was born on February 21, 1966, in Kilembe, Uganda, to James and
Catherine (Kathleen) Johnstone.
Besides his wife and parents, Al is survived by his
four children: Matthew, Sarah, Emily, and Alex, his two brothers, Bill
of Whitehorse and Ewan of Gibsons, and various extended
family.
Al’s early life was an adventure as his
family moved from one mining operation to another.
From Scotland, Jim (a mining engineer) and Kathleen, raised
their three boys in Africa, Canada, and the United States, and Al
loved telling stories of life in British Columbia, Idaho,
Saskatchewan, and eventually New Brunswick. Al graduated from high
school in Miramichi and N.B.C.C. in Woodstock, interning at The Globe
and Mail. He completed his B.A at the University of New Brunswick in
1995, where he was editor in chief of The Brunswickan. He especially
valued the lifelong friendships he made in college and
university.
Al claimed his proudest achievement was raising
four wonderful children with his wife, Jennifer. He was a devoted
husband, father, and homemaker who loved family get-togethers, witty
comebacks, and good-natured argument with his family or
friends. His work in web design recently took him to central
Africa, near his birthplace. He loved new places and family
trips to Edinburgh, Newfoundland, and Niagara Falls were highlights,
the latter just last summer when he was showing symptoms of
ALS. He was proud that he had visited most provincial and
territorial capitals in Canada, adding Whitehorse just before
Christmas when he visited his brother Bill.
Family expresses thanks and appreciation to the
doctors, nurses and staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and the
Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation.
Al’s family and friends will gather on
Monday, March 26, at 2 pm, in the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel for a
celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can
be made to the
