It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Agnes Marie Niblow “Marie” on August 2, 2018 after a lengthy battle with dementia. Marie passed away peacefully in the long-term care wing of the Ponoka, Alberta hospital with her daughter Marina Jones by her side.
Marie was born in the Mater Misericordiae hospital in Rossland to John Philip and Gladys Monaghan. Marie was born and raised in Rossland with her five siblings.
In her younger years Marie worked as store clerk at Hunts Grocery store and later on at The Handy Store for Elmer Thompson and his wife Sadie. Marie worked for many years as a barmaid for three of the local pubs, The White Wolf, Allen Hotel and Orwell Hotel. Marie loved her employment as a barmaid and said there was no better feeling than lifting a heavy tray of drinks over your head to bustle through as busy crowd to serve the happy and thirsty waiting patrons.
Marie had two children, Marina Jones and Gerry Millar with her first husband Wesley Millar who predeceased her in October of 1967.
Marie married her second husband Myrle and together they had one daughter Myrla Brost.
Marie loved to dance and would spend many weekends wooping it up in the Whitebird in North Port and the local pubs, if there was live music there was a good chance you find Marie there enjoying herself with friends and living life to the fullest. Marie was never that fond of TV but loved to watch Jeopardy and Figure skating. Paul Wylie was her all time favorite skater and she could watch him for hours. Marie was a character and will always be remembered for her crazy stunts and antics, her great sense of humor and her loving heart.
Marie was s predeceased by her parents John Philip/Gladys Monaghan, siblings; Gerry, Cecil, Frances Eileen, Desi and her granddaughter Stephanie (Jones) Lubjenka. Many of mom’s friends have passed and she was the last of the three musketeers.
Being the character she was sometime after the age of 70, she decided that dropping the “F’ bomb became acceptable, she said if you aren’t using the Lord’s name in vain then technically it’s not swearing. Her most used expression was “F” the golden years, an expression she picked up many years ago from her long-time friend Peggy Smith of Rossland, who also predeceased her.
Marie leaves behind her children, Marina and Rocky Jones of Fort Macleod, Gerry and Janet Millar of Victoria, Myrla and Daryl Brost of Trail, grandson Jeremy Jones and great-grandson Ashton of Red Deer, great-granddaughter Alexis of St. Paul as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the long-term care wing of the Ponoka Hospital.
There will be no service. Marie will be laid to rest at the Mountain View Cemetery and a family gathering will be held at a later date. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Marie’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC at 300-828 W. 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2 or online at www.alzheimer.ca
